Khamsa Collection

The "Hamsa" or "Khamsa" (hand) symbol is an ancient palm-shaped symbol said to ward off the evil eye.

Popular in the Middle East and North Africa, and often depicted in decorations, jewelry and wall hangings, this symbol has been used as a protective amulet by many faith traditions throughout history, including followers of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Depicting the open palm of the right hand, the name Hamsa (or Khamsa in Arabic) is derived from the root meaning "five". For some Muslims it signifies the five verses of Surah Falaq, seeking Allah's refuge from evil. For others in the Islamic tradition the five fingers represent the Five Pillars of Islam. Yet other Muslims call it the Hand of Fatima, referencing the members of the Prophet Muhammed's daughter Fatimah Zahra's family; those five people over whom the Prophet;">held a cloth.

Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary, while Jews refer to it as the hand of Miriam in remembrance of the sister of Prophets Moses and Aaron.

The Khamsa, a beautiful symbol common to many faith traditions, is celebrated by Artizara in our collection of handcrafted artisan necklaces.
