The 3-Piece Formula for Looking Put Together

The 3-Piece Formula for Looking Put Together

Some women seem to have a mysterious talent for looking put together even when they're wearing very simple clothes. Nothing is overly coordinated. Nothing looks as if it took an hour to plan. And yet somehow the whole outfit works.

The good news is that this isn't necessarily a mysterious fashion gene. Often, it's simply the third piece.

For modest dressing, I like to think of it as the 3-piece formula: a foundation, a layer, and a finishing piece.

Once you get used to it, getting dressed becomes much easier.

1. Start With a Simple Foundation

Your first piece(s) are the foundation of the outfit. It might be a long tunic, button-down shirt, maxi dress, or simple top. Add wide-leg trousers, a long skirt, or another comfortable bottom. Foundation pieces provide the basic silhouette.

Imagine a simple maxi dress or tunic, or a t shirt with jeans. Perfectly nice, but perhaps a little unfinished.

Now comes the fun part.

2. Add the Layering Piece

The second piece gives the outfit personality.

Add a layer to those basics, and suddenly you have an outfit. Add a duster to a tunic and trousers. Layer a bolero over a flowing maxi. Or add denim for some texture.

This works particularly well in modest fashion because layering is already part of how many of us dress. Instead of thinking of that extra layer purely as coverage, think of it as part of the design of the outfit.

The second piece can introduce color, print, embroidery, texture, or structure. It can also change the proportions. A long jacket creates a beautiful vertical line, while a shorter structured layer can balance wider trousers or a full skirt.

3. Add the Piece That Changes Everything

Let your third piece be an accessory.

A beautifully printed hijab can transform a solid tunic and pants. A statement necklace can bring life to a simple maxi dress. A structured handbag, interesting shoes, or even a belt worn over a long cardigan can provide that final bit of intention.

The goal isn't to pile things on. In fact, quite the opposite.

The best third piece often makes everything else look simpler.

The Formula Is a Starting Point, Not a Rule

Of course, fashion formulas should never become another set of rules telling us what we must wear. Think of this one as a shortcut for mornings when you stand in front of your closet wondering why nothing seems to work.

Start with two pieces you know you like.

Then ask: What could I add that would make this feel finished?

Maybe it's a long jacket. Maybe it's an embroidered layer. Maybe it's the floral hijab you bought years ago and haven't worn lately.

At Artizara, we've always loved pieces that can play more than one role in a wardrobe. A beautiful tunic can be the star one day and the quiet foundation of a layered outfit the next. A button-down can be worn closed as a shirt or open as a lightweight jacket.

Looking put together doesn't require more clothes or more time.

Sometimes, all an outfit needs is one more thoughtful piece.
