The palm is richly significant in Islam and symbolizes rest and hospitality in many cultures of the Middle East. The presence of palm trees around an oasis showed that water was the gift of Allah. In the Quran, the palm is mentioned more than any other fruit-bearing tree and in the paradisical imagery of the garden of Paradise (Jannah). The Virgin Mary is also said to have rested under a date palm as she gave birth to Jesus.
